This unit applies to recreational fishers who are responsible for constructing artificial lures for freshwater and saltwater environments.

This unit may also apply to outdoor recreation leaders working for outdoor education or adventure providers; volunteer groups; not-for-profit organisations or government agencies.

This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to construct and work a range of simple fishing lures for both salt and freshwater fishing. The unit focuses on establishing lure design requirements, sourcing materials and equipment for lure construction and working lures to test their effectiveness.

Assessment must ensure construction and evaluation of a range of lures suitable to local conditions to demonstrate competency and consistency of performance.

Assessment must also ensure access to:

an appropriate lure construction area for safe construction, review, testing and evaluation of lures

a fishing environment to work and trial lures

materials and equipment to construct and rig lures.

Method of assessment

A range of assessment methods should be used to assess practical skills and knowledge. The following examples are appropriate for this unit:

observation of safe participation and demonstration of all practical tasks

oral or written questioning to assess knowledge of lure construction to suit the targeted fish species

observation of working, testing and evaluating lures

third-party reports from a supervisor detailing performance.
